Jon Land returns with his 10th Caitlin Strong thriller, Strong as Steel. Besides the 10 novels in this series, Land has also written eleven Blaine McCracken novels, “an exiled agent, a ruthless pursuer of truth who brings down anyone, enemy or friend, when civilian lives are in danger.” As well as seven Ben Kamal and Danielle Barnea series of books which sees a Palestinian-American Ben Kamal, a former Detroit detective and Danielle Barnea, the best agent in Shin Bet, Isreal’s version of the FBI team up to find a serial killer. Jon is the Vice President of marketing for the international Thriller Writers (ITW), an honorary society of authors who write books broadly classified as “thrillers.” Jon also has an extensive 25-year history practicing Martial Arts.
Strong as Steel starts off with a brutal gun fight in Texas, then a returning character about to be hung in Venezuela! Twists that pop up out of nowhere and require a double take throughout the entire book. And a very satisfactory ending which also has a few gun totting characters doing what they do best. Strong as Steel follows Caitlin Strong, a fifth generation Texas Ranger that stumbles onto a 25-year-old unsolved case her father, Texas Ranger Jim Strong was involved in. This case takes her all over Texas, then Mexico, with their Cartel and dirty Federales agents, not to mention ‘Holy Warriors’ sent by The Vatican in Italy to wage war and gain the weapon everyone is after in their effort to “render God’s army invincible in dealing with sinners”, the weapon which kills instantly, with no traces or evidence left behind, a true natural weapon of mass destruction.
Besides Texas Ranger Caitlin Strong, other recurring characters in the Caitlin Strong series are back, including Cort Wesley, who is still very impressive behind a long gun, but does endure a short personal plot of his own in this book which he will have to continue to deal with in the future. Also, Guillermo Paz, a ruthless warrior in his own right. But one on a holy mission to redeem himself from his past. And Jones, the mysterious agent of the shadowy subdivision of Homeland Security that gives him the authority to conduct business on their behalf, until that authority is taken away. You only have it until its determined you’ve become a liability.
The story starts in 1959, sets the tone. What is at risk? In this case a ship with an entire dead crew. Fast forward to 1994, Texas Ranger Jim Strong is investigating a case of a group of dead Texans on a freight train. Then, in present time Texas Ranger Caitlin Strong is asked to serve a warrant to a tech company which she doesn’t get the opportunity to do because as soon as she steps foot out of the elevator of this building where the company is located, gun fire erupts, and Caitlin does what she does best, a true gunfighter in her own right.
From there, the investigation leads Caitlin to Mexico, where another gun fight finds her and she, like her father 25 years ago saves the life of Luna Diaz Delgado, aka ‘la Viuda Roja – The Red Widow. A ruthless Cartel leader who has very much in common with Ranger Strong, which Ranger Strong are we talking about here? Caitlin or her father, or maybe both. The twists and surprises in this thriller are completely unforeseen, which makes them that much more intense and jaw dropping as you’re reading. This Caitlin Strong novel is a definitive must read and has no lack of action, suspense, twists and character development.
