William and Catherine Muller, the  headmasters of a top secret school at an undisclosed location. Named the Arete Academy, arete meaning, “living to ones full potential” in Greek. The school’s purpose is exactly what its name implies, experimenting on children to tap into the vast potential that is the human brain. Mr. Muller, a chemist and Mrs. Muller, a psychologist and both Cold War government researchers who have completed many projects for the government which have resulted in questionable outcomes.

Their subjects, five kids, four of which are orphans and the fifth, Landis Muller. William and Catherine’s son. They believe in their research so much that their own son is a test subject. “The Program” as they called it required daily reading of a special book, weekly “vitamins,” and water therapy. The outcome was suppose to activate ones natural talent and potential. What Mr. and Mrs. Muller didn’t consider is “what if ones natural talent is killing.”

After an incident occurs at the school, a predetermined emergency plan is activated which resulted in shutting down “the program.” Erasing the memories of all the test subjects and insert the children into the world as orphans to different families seeking to adopt. Each growing up unknowing they were part of such an experiment, until one lab tech from the Arete Academy contacts one of the children, now an adult.

The story starts with two strangers meeting on a plane, sitting unusually in first class, occupying seats 2A and 2B. Both feeling familiar to each other but cannot understand how or where they’ve met in the past. Jake, on his way to a job he was lucky enough to secure, an author who writes memoirs for others. Clara, on her way to her planned suicide. She tells him that and he feels a strong obligation to save her, but as they deplane, he loses her in the crowd.

What ensues is a page turning psychological thriller that is hard to put down. Each chapter told predominantly from two of the main characters is intense and suspenseful. A must read novel that captures you from the first chapter and forces you to keep reading, with twists and jaw dropping moments that involve death, betrayal, and a totally unforeseen ending.
