Anthony J. Tata served our nation for 28 years as an officer in the United States Army, earning a very respectable rank of Brigadier General. But he wasn’t done there, he also served as Secretary of Transportation of North Carolina for two years, giving him a full three decades of service to our nation and his home state. As an officer in the best military in the world, in an Afghan combat zone, he has commanded roughly 25,000 troops. He has served in the famous 10th mountain Division out of Fort Drum, NY. The same unit author Sean Parnell deployed with and earned his Purple Heart and two Bronze Stars. He also served a couple of tours in the 82nd Airborne Division, the same unit Author Joshua Hood called home for his time in service. As well as the 101st Airborne Division. He is a graduate of the U.S. Army’s Ranger School and has earned himself a Combat Action Badge and a Bronze Star to name a few.
After a lifetime of service, Brigadier General Tata took his vast knowledge of military tactics, battlefield planning, execution, and experience and penned three different series of books. The Reaper series: A Sniper Novel with author and Army Ranger Nicholas Irving (RLTW) which Brad Thor described as “think Jason Bourne meets Bob Lee Swagger.” The Threat series: Which follows CIA operative Matt Garrett in a world Tata created that has “conspiracy, diplomatic double-talk, betrayal, loyalty, valor, and honor.” His third series follows Captain Jake Mahegan: A Delta Force Veteran. His latest in that series Double Crossfire is available NOW!
Double Crossfire is told mostly from the perspective of Cassie Bagwell. The first ever successful female graduate of the Army’s tough Ranger School. Going undercover to infiltrate a group known as ‘the resistance’ to prevent a coup. A plan years in the making from government big wigs not happy with their current President. Unsure of who is leading the charge, Tata does a fantastic job keeping you guessing, giving subtle clues, then just as quickly taking them away and implementing new ones. Captain Jake Mahegan is also back and is as bad ass as ever. Fighting the good fight and leading the charge. Implementing some of his own propaganda in order to weed out the responsible party that is driving the coup attempt.
While this novel was a fun read, the action top notch and the technology utilized was brilliantly placed, the characters could very well be real in today’s world if you changed some of the names. Instead of President Smart, who just happens to be a real-estate mogul worth billions and loves to tweet, throw in President Trump. Instead of Senator Jamie Carter, enter Hilary Clinton who just like the character in this book won the popular vote by a few million but lost the electoral College vote. Jake Mahegan took a bit of a backseat in order for Cassie Bagwell to shine, I’m wondering if AJ Tata is starting a new series with a female protagonist, introducing her here as the first female to ever complete the Army Ranger school. Many authors today such as Mark Greaney and retired USMC LtCol Rip Rawlings placed females in strong leadership roles in their World War III novel, Red Metal (2019). Author Chris Hauty with his debut Deep State (2020) is also doing something very similar. A move I feel strongly may be predicting the future of modern warfare. Pick up Double Crossfire and lets hope the headlines in this novel don’t make it to the real news outlets. Earning itself a Blast Radius of a MOAB, this novel needs to make its way to your TBR pile asap.
