Chris Hauty may be a newly published author but is a veteran writer on a slightly different scale. A film writer with some notable mentions. Among them, the “Never Back Down” trilogy of films, starring in the second and third film, renown martial artist, Michael Jai White. Another notable mention, “Sniper: Ultimate Kill.” With a resume like that, it’s evident Chris knows how to write an action scene, whether it involves guns, hand to hand combat, espionage, or spy craft. In Deep State, Chris does it all, and does it extremely well.
Deep State introduces a female character, Hayley Chill. Among one of the first female soldiers to make it through Army infantry training. Writing a female character may be considered bold, but I recently reviewed Red Metal by New York Times best-selling author Mark Greaney and co-written by USMC Lieutenant Colonel Hunter “Rip” Rawlings. In that military thriller, they have multiple prominent female leadership roles. Further proving that the battle of tomorrow will involve both genders in all aspects of combat.
Hayley is introduced as a talented soldier, and boxer. However, with her tenure in the Army complete she takes some time off, only to reappear in society about a year later as a White House intern. Once there, she notices things are amiss and quickly begins to investigate this Deep State organization which may be plotting to take over the US Government. Being a patriot, she sees it as her duty to ensure no wrong doing is done and not knowing who to trust, she continues her quest alone, only enlisting help when absolutely necessary. Trust however is hard to come by in Deep State and betrayal is as common as breathing. Nothing is as it seems, twists and turns come at you from absolutely nowhere, making you the reader do a double take.
Deep State is a fresh entry into spy thrillers that captures you from the beginning, introducing a new type of heroine. Hayley Chill is beautiful, courageous, and tough. While Deep State works just fine as a standalone novel, I hope to read more adventures that involve this fresh new character. Pre-Order this debut novel and clear your schedule, as one of the first novels to his stores in 2020, this one will require reading in one sitting.
